How to achieve real-time communication over non-real-time wide-area IP networks
Paolo Verissimo
University of Lisbon
This paper addresses the problem of providing real-time message
latency and reliability assurances for control traffic in wide-area
IP networks, an important problem for large-scale information
infrastructures such as inter-datacenter real-time communication, or
distributed real-time control of critical infrastructures.
We discuss JITeR (Just-In-Time Routing), an algorithm
that timely routes messages using overlay networking and multihoming,
leveraging the natural redundancy of wide-area information
infrastructure networks to enforce real-time message delivery deadlines.
