Beyond TCP: MPTCP vs. SCTP

The first RFC specifying the Transmission Control Protocol dates back to December 1974. Since this time, the deployment and usage of the Internet has changed in significant ways, especially mobile devices and usage »on the go« are on the rise. And although TCP always has been and still is the most fundamental transport protocol without bigger changes for nearly 40 years, it has some serious weaknesses, especially when used on mobile devices, and obviously annoying under »roaming conditions«.

This talk introduces and compares MPTCP, or Multipath TCP, as a promising extension to the TCP and the Stream Control Protocol, SCTP, which does not aim to extend, but has the potential to replace both TCP and UDP.

Processor Simulation using Gem5

Software simulation is commonly used to prototype and evaluate new ideas in computer architecture research. Modern computer architectures tend to get more and more complex and multi-core systems with deeper cache hierarchies provide new dimensions of exploration. A flexible simulation framework is needed to be able to evaluate a wide range of new ideas in a diversity of systems.

In this talk I will present gem5. The gem5 simulator provides a highly configurable simulation infrastructure that is capable of evaluating a wide range of systems. It provides several ISAs, a diversity of CPU models and system execution modes. This is combined with a flexible memory system supporting multiple cache coherence protocols and interconnect models. The framework´s modularity and use of clean interfaces allow researchers to focus on subsystems without the need to understand the whole framework.
