As the result of an agreement between the New Zealand and German governments candidates are treated as 'domestic' students and therefore required to pay only domestic tuition fees.
The University of Otago also offers two scholarship schemes:
In Dunedin the cost of living in rented accommodation is reckoned to be about $NZ200 per week including food and lodging. Candidates are permitted to supplement their scholarship by working up to 240 hours per year. Tutoring work is usually available within the department.
Applications should be made on the appropriate form, available from the Registry, by 1 October of each year. Applicants must hold a German passport and all applications are subject to normal customs and immigration approval.
Provided that the candidate is an "A" student, there is a good chance of an application being successful. An award must be taken up no later than the June of the year in which it is awarded.
Relevant areas of research currently being undertaken in the department include:
(Wenn auch schon abgelaufen, so vielleicht doch noch informativ: Es könnte ja mal wieder so eine Ausschreibung kommen .... )
The project in the Software Engineering and Collaborative Modelling Laboratory involves the development of distributed information systems that interconnect existing software applications and databases across multiple platforms (Unix, Windows, NT) so that they may be accessed in an integrated and coherent manner.
Candidates should ideally have a Masters level degree in a computer related subject (or equivalent experience) and good programming skills. Experience with any of the following areas would be an advantage: Java, C++, CORBA, Unix, Database systems and metadata. Familiarity with intelligent multi-agent software systems or ontology development would also be beneficial.
Salary is in the range $NZ25,076 to $NZ28,743 for Research Assistants and $NZ26,402 to $NZ29,258 for Junior Research Fellows (Grade 1), depending on qualifications and experience.
Applications quoting reference number N97/329, close on Thursday, 29 January 1998.
