Well, I woke up with the realisation that maybe there was a src for debianutils at debian.org- and so there was.. have installed tempfile, all OK now but /slightly embarrassed/ 

Sorry to bother you all; but "Thanks Adam" for the swift response. I now have a proper config and an almost successful make. I will hack the latter somewhat before coming back to the list.
