I am planning to do DDE hacking for a bit as a possible trampoline for more involved work.
I saw that you require pretty standard (and minimal) GNU toolbox. Does [almost] everyone cross-compile from Linux? Is there a CD (or VM image) somewhere with pre-built development environment?

Try the 'vbeprobe' GRUB command to see the available modes. I still have 0x4022 as one mode in one of my menu.lst files which worked for some version.
