yes the amd64 build worked after installing that host library you
recommended.

the gcc build is from emdebian cross-compilation, from quite some time ago. 
i caaan try using an openembedded arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi gcc 4.3
compiler, i'll let you know how i get on.  but it's late/early so it'll be a
day or two.
