Grub Question + some other information needed

Hi List I know that a grub different from the standard is used. I downloaded the grub on Adam's site but have no idea how to get that diff file to work. There is a ReadMe called as grub-0.97-os.3.README that gives some info but I don't just get the fact that it is to boot from network. I am just booting from the hard disk using standard grub (with -modaddr option used with bootstrap), but now I need to use the vbeset command (and maybe others in future), so I really need that grub. I have done these $ wget ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/grub/grub-0.97.tar.gz $ wget http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~adam/grub/0.97/grub-0.97-os.7.diff.gz $ tar xzf grub-0.97.tar.gz $ cd grub-0.97 $ zcat ../grub-0.97-os.7.diff.gz | patch -p0 so what i do next? just install this grub (using install) or something else? because the next steps in readme seem like specific for diskless booting from some network. and what version of adam's grub should I download (i used the grub-0.97-os.7.diff.gz because it seemed latest). some other things (unrelated to above) -- can i make programs that could write output to some file on hard disk. Is somewhere a reference manual that gives info about what datatypes and functions can i use in a general program i write, e.g. to do something equivalent of scanf,malloc,etc. Regards, Ashish

difficulties with Loader

Hi, During my play with 'run' application (./l4/pkg/loader/examples/run) I've discovered two issues. They both applies to the chain 'run'<->'loader'<->'simple_ts'. 1. First issue: I start 'con_demo1' application using 'run' utility 'l' command, then try to kill it. Kill process fails with following output (here F.02 is 'run' thread, 10.00 is 'con_demo1' task): A.00:simplets| task_kill(): Kill 10.00 from E.02 but owner is F.02 E.02:loader | l4ts_kill_task(): failed (dest=10.00 server=A.00, ret=-11, exc 0) E.02:loader | con_demo1,#10: Error -11 (not owner) killing task (ignored) It looks like inconsistency in loader's behavior. 'run' uses l4loader_app_open_call() and l4loader_app_kill_call() l4loader's methods to start and kill application, but l4loader_app_kill_call() invocation always fails as 'loader' explicitly set 'run' as owner: /* set client as owner so that client is able to kill that task */ if ((error = l4ts_owner(app->tid, app->owner))) { app_msg(app, "Error %d (%s) setting ownership", error, l4env_errstr(error)); return error; } But 'l4loader' implicitly passes itself as caller when he makes call to l4ts_kill_task() in app_cleanup_extern() function. So I think inconsistency is quite obvious. A straightforward solution here is just to remove l4ts_owner() invocation from l4loader's code. Do I miss something? 2. Second issue Scenario is the same as before: 'con_demo1' is started by 'run' and then killed by using run's 'kill' command. In this case: - 'run' calls l4loader_app_kill_call() - 'l4loader' calles app_cleanup_extern() - app_cleanup_extern() calles l4ts_kill_task(app->tid, 0) As a result simple_ts will not free allocated TaskNo for 'con_demo1' (use run's 'A' command for TS state after task has been killed). I think last argument for l4ts_kill_task() function is wrong. DEFAULT_RELOC and roottask

Hi, I try to run l4con examples with grub script given in ./l4/pkg/l4con/doc/menu.lst (slightly modified/updated). The menu.lst starts con_demo1, con_demo2 and con_demo3. Boot process gives me this error: #0d: loading "/boot/test/con_demo1" from [026ce000-0277262c] to [00800000-008250b5][00826000-0083d000] entry at 00068370 via trampoline page code symbols at [3a30e000-3a313000] (20kB), lines at [3a2fd000-3a30e000] (68kB) #0e: loading "/boot/test/con_demo2" from [02773000-02804e08] to [00800000-00815d11] Roottask: cannot load binary because address at 00800000 not free loaded module: [02773000-02804e08) /boot/test/con_demo2 overlaps with: [00800000-00826000) #0d con_demo1 I found that Makefile specifies DEFAULT_RELOC_x86 variable as: DEFAULT_RELOC_x86 = 0x00800000 As a result -Ttext=0x800000 option is added to 'ld' invocation options. I thought that is the root of problem and commented variable, but It didn't help. Build system started to use default DEFAULT_RELOC value 0x01000000 from ./l4/mk/binary.inc and roottask gives the same error with new 0x01000000 address. 1. I thought that DEFAULT_RELOC specifies virtual address not a physical one. Am I right? 2. If answer to my first question is 'yes'. Why in this case roottask relocates a code? It is strange as roottask operates with physical memory addresses. 3. When am I supposed to specify DEFAULT_RELOC variable? In which situation? 4. Why do we need the relocation performed by root task at all? Why can't we just use appropriate mapping to addresses where GRUB loaded ELF modules? Each server starts in its own virtual address space, so I think it's possible. Why was it done that way? What is the problem with described approach (without relocation)? 5. I've been playing around with L4Env,L4Linux and stuff for a while but have never faced with mentioned problem. Are there anything special about the way how con_demo1,2,3 are built? I mean Root task relocates another modules to the next free 4K aligned address but con_demo1,2,3 modules to some exact address. Why does it happened? 6. There is ./l4/pkg/l4con/examples/Makeconf file with link addresses specification. But according to "Building Infrastructure for DROPS (BID) Specification" only Makeconf.local file is included into generated Makefile from project directories. Why is it where? Build DROPS on 64bit Host for 32bit Target

Hi, Is it possible to build DROPS on 64bit HOST OS for 32bit TARGET (architecture there Fiasco will be executed) if corresponding cross-compiler is already available? I tried but it looks like DICE ignores TARGET architecture and generates IPC code for HOST architecture (64 bit). It seems that there are no problems with Fiasco, L4Env and L4Linux. Patch for DICE that fix issue with AMD64 host

Hi, I would like to submit path that fix problem when you use DICE to produce code for i32 on 64bit OS. This is obviously wrong if DICE is a 64bit application and a code is generated for 32bit system. Problem with Fiasco under QEMU

Hi, I've encountered problems under QEMU. Problems occur in many different configs but this is the simplest way to reproduce: Build Fiasco with default config, only "Handle and preserve segments" shall be turned on. Configure ORe for RTL-8139 NIC only and build L4Env. Build L4Linux with x86-ux_defconfig, only "ORe stub driver" shall be turned on. Boot with following QEMU command: qemu /dev/sdb -no-kqemu -serial telnet:localhost:5555,server NOTES: 1. I use USB flash stick but image file could be used as well with the same result. 2. Hi, I have tried to build Fiasco µ-Kernel using instructions found : http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/fiasco/use.html I have downloaded whole repository using : $ svn co -N http://svn.tudos.org/repos/tudos/trunk tudos then i have run $cd l4 $make O=/my-user-build-dir config I have saved configuraion without changing anything. Then I have run make O=/my-user-build-dir But it gives me following error messages when building bootstrap : ...
