L4-Linux with l4-gmd

Since I'm unable to run L4-Linux with Fiasco on my 486 - I can boot with init=/bin/sh but it reboots as soon as I do anything that involves a fork - I thought I'd try L4-Linux with the old, non-free L4. So I downloaded l4-gmd/486/obj/l4.exe and found an old menu.lst, which contains examples such as: kernel= (fd0)/rmgr -configfile module= (fd0)/grubboot.img boothack nowait module= (fd0)/rmgr.cfg.linux module= (fd0)/glinux.gz root=/dev/sda1 kernel= (fd0)/rmgr module= (fd0)/grubboot.img boothack nowait module= (fd0)/hello (Main difference: there is no sigma0 module.) But how do I make grubboot.img out of l4.exe, if this is what I'm supposed to do? (The man page for rmgr says the modules should be ELF files.) Edmund

In the meantime you can either fetch a current copy of l4sys and l4util using cvs or install some missing links by yourself. Simply create include/l4/{sys,util} in your l4 directory and link all header files from the pkg/l4{sys,util}/include/l4/ to it. I will ask Michael to provide a new snapshot for the l4 libraries. Hi, I downloaded the L4Linux (and all other Components) through the CVS, configured it and tried to compile it. I received a lot of error messages and the compiler stoped without building the kernel (tried it with 2.0 and 2.2). What's wrong or where can I find a working version? Does Erich still maintain GRUB? There is a potential licensing problem because parts of the netboot code we've started from are licensed under a BSD license while GRUB is GPL'd, so it may be illegal to aggregate the two. Hello, The latest Fiasco which is available through CVS has the compatiblity with the previous snapshot (at 990428)? I've just compiled new Fiasco (main, rmgr, sigma0), sample server (hello) and L4-Linux 2.2 on my PC. I copied them into the grub-ext2-fs-floppy (thus, grub is same with that of the previous snapshot), but I could not make them work well, even hello server does not run. (Sorry, I can't report displayed message at present.) I will check some couples of the combinations among old/new kernel, old/new pager, old/new server, etc. If compiled correctly, the new programs can cooporate with old programs? suzuki

L4Linux 2.2; Remote CVS

Hackers, we've released a port of the Linux kernel version 2.2 (available via remote CVS -- see below). It runs quite stably on L4/x86, but we have to conduct some more tests with Fiasco; that's why, we haven't released a snapshot yet. Also, we have set up read-only access to parts of our CVS repository: you can now access via CVS the latest (unstable) code of L4Linux 2.0, L4Linux 2.2, Fiasco, Rmgr (and other components of the L4 development environment), and our versions of the OSKit and GRUB. Hello, I m a newbie to this list and also in case of Kernel-programming. So I writing this mail with the hope that any feedback is coming. First I was a OS/2 Programmer also using the Watcom-Compiler.For the reason that the support of IBM was uncalculatable I tried to find something different there I can use my Watcom skills.And I found QNX.But it was simple to expensive for my use but I was thrilled from it s abilities.So I will ask some question to the list in the hope of feedback. 1)Tried somebody to compile FIASCO with a different compiler then GNU GCC 2)Are there any plans to support SMP or other forms to use this kernel in High Performance Computing or Clustering. 3)From QNX I own the Demodisk(IAT-Internet Appliances Toolkit).Exist something similar for FIASCO and DROPS. 4)Tried somebody FIASCO kernel on Embedded products from AMD and Jumptec. Hallo, nachdem nun etwas Zeit für die liegen gebliebenen Arbeiten ist, habe ich versucht, das Repository zu übersetzen. Das ging natürlich nicht. Zwei Gründe: 1. Die privaten Includedirs sind nicht gesetzt (mit einem "PRIVATE_INCDIR='../include' make" kommt man ein Stück weiter). Sollen die privaten includes lokal gesetzt werden, dann müssen alle Makefiles angepaßt werden oder setzen wir das global? 2. Es gibt Unstimmigkeiten über die Lokation der L4 Headerfiles (ehemals libl4sys). Micha vermutet sie unter l4/sys/, sie liegen aber unter l4/. Was ist nun richtig und wer passt es an? This is a way to comment out unused code: Everything between "#if 0" and "#endif" is stripped by the preprocessor, and is ignored by the compiler. For more information about the C/C++ preprocessor, please refer to the GNU CPP manual. On most systems, you can browse it with "info cpp". Default attributes of tasks/lthreads

Hi Hackers, I have a question regarding the default scheduling parameters of newly created tasks and lthreads under L4: When I create a new task with the task_new syscall, according to the L4 manual, that task's lthread 0 starts running immediately. But what are it's scheduling parameters (timeslice duration, priority) in this case ? Similarly, when I create a new lthread with lthread_ex_regs, how are it's scheduling parameters determined ? Also, is it possible to set these parameters for an lthread that does not yet exist (The manual doesn't explicitly state this, but the fact that -conceptually- all lthreads of a task always exist would suggest that this is indeed possible) ? It is intended to be used with functions that are not supposed to return. When a function declared with this attribute looks like it returns anyway, the compiler issues a warning. Please consult the Gcc documentation for more details (on most system, you can run "info gcc 'c extensions' 'function attr'"). Although I have know: #define L4_NORETURN __attribute__((noreturn)) but I don't understand the function definition: void init(struct multiboot_info *mbi, unsigned int flag, l4_kernel_info_t *info) L4_NORETURN; there why we can use "L4_NORETURN" and what is the effect of "L4_NORETURN". Hello, Just I've checked Fiasco (990428), L4-Linux (981207) and grub-ext2fs-floppy. Although compiling OSKit was truncated as FAQ (relocation trucated), Fiasco & L4-Linux was bootable on my PC which Debian 2.0. Except of X window system, most work well, as original Linux. It was quite impressive & exciting! I've never impressed as such. uname returned Linux 2.0.21(or 20?) - I remember, L4-Linux seems to be based old kernel source. But the L4-Linux source also seems to include something taken from later kernel source (ex. Configure.help). L4-Linux will be rewritten from the later Linux kernel (ex. 2.0.36, or 2.2.x)? Or, will be a branch from the old kernel? If asking about L4-Linux is off-topic, please let me know who/where I could ask about L4-Linux. Sorry for poor English.
