ARM with Qemu

Hi l4Hackers, I am trying to set up a simulator with Qemu and l4linux ARM to simulate the Zynq board. I have successfully compiled Fiasco and L4 with the tool chain "arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc". I succeeded to launch l4linux but I have no input on l4linux when it's running on Qemu. Nevertheless, the fiasco jdb can be invoked. After reading the mailing list I changed the hello world program to take inputs and tried a bare metal application with l4re with the same result (I didn't modify the module list). So, I tried to do the same thing with the board and I have inputs with the l4 bare metal application and a kernel panic for the l4linux. I boot with the uboot image on it. Nonetheless, using uImage for qemu doesn't change anything: ./qemu-system-arm -M arm-generic-fdt-plnx -m 512M -kernel /path/bootstrap.uimage -dtb /path/devicetree.dtb -serial mon:stdio I tried to compile the u-boot from Xilinx and Qemu freezes when I launch the l4 application. To be sure I have done things right, I also tried the modified hello world program on x86 intel and it works well. Then I launched a Petalinux with Qemu and a uImage with uboot and it works. They are a virtual filesystem provided by Linux. sysfs is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sysfs procfs is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procfs So, it isn't needed that you copy them to ramdisk. But if procfs isn't mounted , you can manually mount procfs. For example $ mount -t proc proc proc/ $ mount -t sysfs sys sys/ And the ramdisk already has enough packages and files to connect network. Important thing is to successfully load ethernet driver on L4/L4linux environment. If you succeed in working ethernet driver, you can use commands 'ifup' and 'ifdown','ifconfig' to connect network. Ram size of the arm images

Hi, As you know there are many configuration file for arm boards under l4re/mk/platforms folder. When we open one of them, vexpress, it contains the following information: PLATFORM_NAME = "ARM Versatile Express" PLATFORM_ARCH = arm PLATFORM_RAM_BASE = 0x60000000 PLATFORM_RAM_SIZE_MB = 256 The interesting part here is the size of the RAM, because you cannot give same size of the RAM when you compile the l4 lua configuration. In case you give l4linux raises "memory cannot reach out of the ..." error. what is the exact reason of that? is there any specific point where the ram size of arm boards are static defined? Problem with socket program on l4linux

I have copied my binaries compiled statically to ramdisk for executing on l4linux. When I execute, //server side /tmp # ./server1 Socket created bind done Waiting for incoming connections.... //client side /tmp # ./client1 connect failed. Error: Network is unreachable But I have enabled the network support and drivers in L4Linux configuartion. Where will the .config file be located, so as to reconfirm if I have enabled correctly? I couldn't find it in l4linux build directory. Also, I executed packet sniffer on l4linux, which showed /tmp # ./simplesniffer eth0 Opening device eth0 ERROR: eth0: No such device exists (SIOCGIFHWADDR:No such device) Thank you L4 community

Hi, Thank you for your answer Adam. Nothing happens when I press ESC. I also tried to send ESC with the QEMU monitor using "sendkey esc" which has also no effect. Same thing with the Hello World. I really don't know what could cause this problem but I think it may have something to do with capabilities (just a guess). I have to say that my QEMU works fine, I tested it with another Linux. My .dtb is good too. Do you have any ideas or suggestions ? I was also wondering about the "libio: Warning: Query of 'vbus' failed!" during the boot of L4Linux. I don't think it is a problem (due to the fact that I'm not using any IPC) but I'm not sure. We mounted the ramdisk and copied the binary to l4linux ramdisk but while executing on l4linux, /# cd tmp /tmp#./hello /bin/sh: ./hello : not found How do I execute my binary? Regards, Harini

Running the FERRET Examples

Hi L4 hackers, I'm trying to run the scalar demo from the FERRET package. Although the server loop from "l4/pkg/ferret/server/re/sensordir.cc" starts, no scalar sensor is registered in "l4/pkg/ferret/examples/demo/scalar_demo/main.c" as the program execution pauses at this line: ret = ferret_create(srv, 10, 1, 0, FERRET_SCALAR, 0, "0:100:%", s1, &malloc); which leads to an l4_ipc_call to the sensor directory. Getting dataspace of a tmpfs-file blocks forever

Hey, when I have created and filled a file in tmpfs, reading normally (-> read() ) from it works fine. However, I cannot get the associated dataspace. The call would just block forever. No, you only have to generate kernel modules if you want to load them into the L4Linux kernel. If you simply want to run a Linux user application on top of L4Linux all you have to do is to make this program binary available to L4Linux, for instance by putting it onto the ramdisk. I am trying to execute a hello world application on l4 linux.I generated hello.ko file.What is the procedure to mount the l4linux ramdisk and how to copy my .ko file to it. I gave the following command on the l4linux command prompt. [root]# mkdir /mnt/rd [root]# mount /dev/ram0 /mnt/rd mount:mounting /dev/ram0 on /mnt/rd failed:no such file or directory.

Opts: (null) vmlinuz | VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) on device 1:0. vmlinuz | Freeing unused kernel memory: 144K (00709000 - 0072d000) vmlinuz | Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 3346692958 ns) vmlinuz | /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off I disabled ACPI and power management options also. I have included init=/bin/sh in l4linux.cfg script. Still the linux command prompt doesn't appear via l4linux launch. UX/RT - a Universally eXtensible Real-Time OS

I am planning to write a new L4-based multi-server OS called UX/RT (initially I will use Fiasco.OC as the kernel since it has x86_64 support and supports kernel capabilities, but may eventually support seL4 as well). Unlike the other current L4 OS environments, it will be a multi-server Unix-like OS resembling QNX and Plan 9. I am intending it to have good support for both desktop and embedded systems (servers are not a huge priority; the microkernel architecture might limit the maximum throughput for heavily I/O-bound workloads). I am dissatisfied with all the current mainstream OSes and want to take on the challenge of making something better. I am planning to reuse as much existing third-party code as possible, especially as I will probably be working on it alone at first (of course if anybody here wants to contribute they can). However, due to the design, the only part of L4Re that I can use as-is is sigma0 (which may require minor changes to fit into the XIP-based boot process I am going to use). I will be implementing my own root task which may use a few parts of moe, although I haven't looked too closely at the source for moe so I'm not sure if there's anything there that I can use. Other than sigma0, the low-level kernel headers, and possibly some parts of moe, I'm not sure if there is much else from L4Re (or Genode) that would be useful in the context of a pure Unix-like multi-server OS. Most of the code I reuse will come from BSD and GNU (which gets me quite far; the root task will probably be the biggest part of the base OS that will be primarily original code). I already have a very good idea of the design I'm going to use; I'll post more about it later.
