Timing problem on mem_fpage_unmap() in the fiasco kernel

Hi, I've been working on porting DROPS to Bulverde board - PXA270. My senior already made DROPS work on OMAP board before. He worked with L4Linux-2.6.16, but I don't know exact version of fiasco kernel and L4Env packages because they are not specified. I got all the sources from my senior - not the latest things.. - and have tried them work on Bulverde board. My status is that I have an unsolvable error in fiasco kernel. On L4Linux-2.6.16's booting process, one step is "Freeing INITRD", and system halted on that point. By tracing codes, I got to know while the mem_fpage_unmap() function in l4/kernel/fiasco/src/kern/map_util.cpp executed, the system halted. And I put "delay codes" into that function's for() {}, and then the system continued to execute and boot succeed. I found this fact after I added printf() into that code in order to debug. On that point - "Freeing INITRD", whether the boot process goes next step or not depends on how much delay time is put on that code, mem_fpage_unmap(). If I make the delay time a little bit longer, then the system goes to next step at that point, but stops somewhere else after that. If I make the delay time too short, the system never go to next step. And the mem_fpage_unmap() is called a lot while the system works, but only in the "Freeing INITRD" part, the problem appears. I think this is a serious timing error, but I can't know what the problem is. I already tried all the combinations of kernel and L4Linux options before. when I tried to install the latest kernel and l4linux-2.6.18, the halting problem didn't appear. And I found that the latest kernel's mem_fpage_unmap() functions implementation has a lot of changes compared to the kernel I work with. Could you help me solve this problem?? Please don't say to me "use the latest one".. My senior already succeed on OMAP board with the old versions. Thank you.

Anyway: * Be sure to limit your scenario to just l4env and dope (Remove all lines after .../l4dope.) * Try to run l4io w/o "--noirq" as this mode is seldom tested and will not work in the future. Hello, I'd like to run two L4Linux 2.4 based kernels and one L4Linux 2.6 based kernel. Is this something that can be achieved relatively easily or would all running kernels need to be 2.6/2.4? How do the 'guest' kernels communicate to each other in an L4 environment? In User Mode Linux (UML) and Xen on the guest kernels there is built-in support for pseudo Ethernet devices; these devices are then bridged together on the host kernel. I understand the architecture is considerably different in L4, but is there some similar mechanism already in place that allows Ethernet/IP communication between the running Linux kernels? DROPS L4Env I/O client API not applicable for C++ programs

Hello! I have just encountered a problem with the L4Env I/O client API libio.h if you try to use this in a C++ program. You get a syntax error because there is a variable having the name "class". But that is a C++ keyword. In l4/include/x86/l4/generic_io/types.h: **************************************** struct l4io_drv: "unsigned class:8;" struct l4io_pci_dev: "unsigned long class;" In l4/include/x86/l4/generic_io/libio.h: **************************************** "int l4io_pci_find_class(unsigned long class, ...)" Although these variable names are possible in C, you run in syntax errors when trying to use these API interfaces in a C++ program. I think these variables should get other names, shouldn't they? Hello, The more I go forward, the more questions come to me : http://lists.tunes.org/archives/tunes/1995-June/000617.html the exokernel paper says somewhere that all the exokernel does is to securely multiplex the cpu (that's time) and memory (that's space) ressources. that's what you said you want from a good os in your `why ...' paper. and some months ago, i observed that the os may be viewed as a device driver for these two because that's what device drivers should do: securely multiplex some hardware ressource http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/l4-hurd/2006-08/msg00005.html "In contract to our approach [L4], [Exokernel] is based on the philosophy that a kernel should /not/ provide abstractions but only a minimal set of primitives. Consequently, the Exokernel interface is architecture dependent . . . We believe that dropping the abstractional [sic] approach could only be justified by substantial performance gains. . . . Now I have a Motorola E680i cell phone, it is using 312MHz Intel XScale Bulverde (PXA270) processor, which is using the 5th generation of the ARM architecture. Is it supported by L4Linux currently? Open /dev/console problem with the new l4linux-2.6.18 on Xscale

Hi, I first had tried to install l4linux-2.6.17 with fiasco kernel on Xscale. I got error which I already posted before on boot process. That was due to bugs in fiasco kernel, by Adam Lackorzynski's advice. so I updated Fiasco kernel & l4linux-2.6.18 from CVS. Again, I tried to boot, but failed with the following warning message: "Warning: Unable to open an initial console" After loading ramdisk on boot process, the system fail to look up the /dev/console file in ramdisk. So like before, I added devfs options to fs/Kconfig for mounting devfs filesystem again and then tried to boot, but failed.... You said before "enabling devfs option" is no option as it's gone with 2.6.18. "devfs" is completely obsoleted by "udev"?? Then How can I use devfs filesystem and succeed to open the initial console file and boot?? Thank you so much...

Fiasco.image with debugging information

   Hi,    I work with fiasco kernel in arm platform.    I want to debug fiasco kernel with debugging tool.    But, I need to get fiasco kernel object with debuging information.    First I put this flags in Makefile.   ----------------------------------------------------  vi kernel/fiasco/build/Makefile ...  CFLAGS        += -g  CPPFLAGS += -g  SFLAGS += -g ... -----------------------------------------------------    after make, fiasco.image has no debugging information.    and also I try  this flags. no change. ----------------------------------------------------  vi kernel/fiasco/build/Makefile .. CARCHFLAGS_arm += -g CPPARCHFLAGS_arm += -g ASFLAGS_arm += -g ... -----------------------------------------------------    So I try to roottask(l4env).  I put this flags in config file. ----------------------------------------------------  vi l4/mk/modes.inc ... CARCHFLAGS_arm += -g CPPARCHFLAGS_arm += -g ASFLAGS_arm += -g ... -----------------------------------------------------  after make, roottask has a debugging information.    How can I get fiasco.image with debugging information?

Boot problem with the new version of l4linux on Xscale

Hi! I tried to run Fiasco-L4Linux on Xscale board. I'm using L4Linux-2.6.17 version. First, I made a bootstap image (=bootstrap.raw) and loaded on Xscale and run it. But some server programs' ranges were overlapped, so I fixed some server programs' DEFAULT_RELOC_arm address, and then started working. During the boot process, "Warning: Unable to open an initial console" is warned and halt. I checked on boot process after ram disk is loaded, dev file path lookup fails.. So as to mount dev file system again after loading ram disk, I added "devfs options" to fs/Kconfig. And then the warning message is not presented. Hello again, while playing with l4 I got couple of (easy) questions. 1. Can DOpE write a log anywhere on filesystem? 2. Where can I see how much memory I can assign to vmlinuz (how much memory uses DOpE and L4)? 3. What are those 4 slide bars by the linux window in DOpE? 4. How can I run more that one Linux process? 5. Can I use pistachio in place of fiasco? If so, how? 6. How do I halt L4 and DOpE? Hope it's not too much to answer. ratko

vbe info block

Helo again, The boot process (with dresdens's grub) stops with: "Did not found VBE info block in multiboot info. Grub has to set the video mode with the vbset command" vbeprobe in grub returns: 0x109, 0x10a, 0x10b, 0x10c I tried with "vbeset 0x117", "vbeset 0x109" and "vbeset 0x10c" in menu.lst, but get: "Mode 0x117 is not supported" Then I tried with debian's grub 0.95 but it doesnt recognize "modaddr". Any ideas? ratko

crt0_tramppage

Hi all! In the last stage of L4Linux-2.6 compile I get "undefined reference to crt0_tramppage" and similar crt0 errors. /usr/.../l4v2/libloader.s.so: undefined reference to 'crt0_tramppage'. .... What am I missing? I searched 2006 and 2005 archives and found a post on "Thu Feb 24 11:01:11 2005" but no definite answer that would help me. Greetings, Ratko Rudič

Assertion failed in Fiasco-UX

Hello! When I try to start fiasco-ux on my Linux system, it stops with the following message: ASSERTION_FAILED (((((*(int *) &(status))) & 0xff) == 0x7f) && ((((*(int *) &(status))) & 0xff00) >> 8) == 10) in function static unsigned int Hostproc::create(unsigned int) in file /DROPS/l4/kernel/fiasco-ux/src/kern/ux/hostproc.cpp:120 If I run the same binaries on different machines there is no problem and fiasco-ux starts as expected. The only difference between my machine and the others seems to be a different hosting Linux kernel. Are there any Linux-specific problems known? I am not sure, but this seems to be a bug in fiasco-ux.
