Hi all, I am using kill-l4 to try and kill a task started with run-l4, but it fails as follows: simplets| l4_ts_kill_recursive_component(): Kill 21.00 sent by 20.00 owner 20.00 simplets| task_kill(): Kill 21.00 from 20.00 but owner is 20.00 | l4ts_kill_task_recursive(): failed (server=8.00, ret=-11, exc 0) Any ideas? heap memory usage in L4 drops/oskit task

How can I check how much heap space is left (or used) in my drops/oskit program? Normally (in linux/gnu) I would use getrusage, which also returns a number of other useful statistics, but this function doesn't seem to exist in drops/oskit...

L4Linux hybrid programs

Hi, I just wanted to announce that hybrid programs for L4Linux-2.6 do _not_ need to be patched anymore. We now added an interface to make it possible to trap system calls making the patching workaround void. Hi, I am getting kernel panic when booting my vmlinuz26. I am using the RAM Disk 'drops-rd' I downloaded from DROPS. Linux would boot. After I log in and typed 'ls', l4RM complained that no data manager was found. The system was hung. I suspect it was my L4Linux configuration problem. I attached my config at the end of the message. Missing data manager

Hi, I am getting kernel panic when booting my vmlinuz26. I am using the RAM Disk 'drops-rd' I downloaded from DROPS. Linux would boot. After I log in and typed 'ls', l4RM complained that no data manager was found. The system was hung. I suspect it was my L4Linux configuration problem. I attached my config at the end of the message. Could someone point out what was missing or wrong? Shared dataspace problem

Hi all, I have a dataspace, reserved as pool 1 by dm_phys, which two tasks shares. They synchronise access to the data by setting a lock at the start of the dataspace with a cmpxchg-loop. All tasks map the dataspace to their own VM area. The problem is that if one of the tasks exists then the other would stop with a page fault error the next time it accesses the shared dataspace. Both of them where happily reading and writing to the dataspace at exactly the place where the page fault occur. Any suggestions? Thanks Leon

Unable to compile DROPS grub package

Hi, I can't compile the DROPS version of GRUB. I checked out the grub package from the DROPS anonymous CVS. When compiling it with gcc 3.4.3 I got numerous errors. Each time I edited the source file to get it go a little farther, I got more errors. I know I could just use the copy of stage2_elterito from the demo CD, but I really like to have the capability to build my own GRUB. By the way, GRUB from GNU compiles successfully. But it lacks the features found in DROPS enhanced version. What was the problem? Excerpts of make logs from my five attempts are attached. It's a bit long. I apologize. How to load and run multiple instances of L4Linux, etc.

Hi, My primary interest is to use Fiasco/L4Linux as a network emulator. To do so I'd like to run multiple copies of L4Linux on my PC, with each copy emulating a node in my network. I have just managed to get my compiled L4Linux-2.6 up and running using a copy of the GRUB menu.lst from the demo CD. But I am a new L4 user and have no idea on how to configure my boot to achieve this. Could someone suggest a sample menu.lst for booting multiple instances of L4Linux? Another novice question is how to run a Linux application on L4Linux. Can I simply add my application binary (e.g. XORP) that was pre-compiled for my desktop Linux to my L4Linux RAM disk? According to the build instructions, a "make config" in the l4 directory will create a configuration menu. It doesn't seem to work in today's (07-16-2005) CVS version: l4 # make config make: *** No rule to make target `config'. Stop. l4 # make xconfig make: *** No rule to make target `xconfig'. Stop. There isn't a Makefile in the l4 directory, either. Why is this so? - Neil

Hello i had the same problem some weeks ago. It is just an example that seems broken. For my part i changed the makefile : in the subfolder x86 , edit the GNUMakerules and in the targets comment multiboot-smp and it should be fine. Fabien Chaillou

Hi Adam, I did not intentionally checkout dde. It just came with l4linux-2.6-env. I think it was part of the module. If it is not required to build l4linux-2.6 maybe you would want to separate it from the module? By the way, how can I receive CVS commit notifications via email, or is it even possible? The compiler error appears with more recent compiler versions, and I have now finally fixed it internally. Should be in our public CVS by tomorrow. On the other side, how did it come that you checked out dde? You don't need it to get L4Linux going. L4Linux 2.4 server priority

Hi all, I have some questions with regard to the priority of a L4Linux server: Q1: In my loader script I set the "priority" parameter to what some help file somewhere (I think on the website) showed namely 0xA0. When I do a l4lx_thread_prio_get inside a kernel module I get the value "100". Is the loader "priority" parameter hex or decimal? [0xA0 -> 100 ????] Q2: If I set the "priority" parameter of a second L4Linux server to 0x30 I also get 100. Does this parameter actually work? - if not where is "100" defined? Q3: The API call l4lx_thread_prio_get() actually fails when the module loads complaining about exported symbols, while l4lx_thread_create() which is defined in the same header file (thread.h) and in the same source file (thread.c) works fine. Can somebody please help me understand this!? Q4: In the L4Linux server the kernel's priority is set based on a define named PRIO_KERNEL which is defined as 127. How does this PRIO_KERNEL defined value (and other PRIO_* values) relate to the "priority" parameter. Thanks Leon

L4Env Isolating Hard Drives

All, Consider a x86 computer that has two physical IDE hard drives. Is it possible for an L4Env I/O manager to allocate exactly one hard drive to an L4Linux2.6 server and allocate the second hard drive to another L4 task in a way that the L4Linux2.6 server has no way of knowing that the second hard drive exists?
