Help! Unable to build L4Env-0.2

Hi fellow hackers, I am a newbie here. I am trying to build my first L4Linux-2.6 setup, but failed at building L4Env. I downloaded and unpacked the following S/W from the L4Env download page: - l4env-0.2 tarball - dde-0.2 tarball - libstdc++.0.2 - oskit-06302003 - oskit10-06302003 I also checked out L4Linux-2.6-env from CVS. I then followed the instructions and did 'make config' and 'make' from inside the 'l4' directory. The compilation eventually failed at building l4/pkg/loader. The linker complained that the library -lcon was missing. My Linux is 2.6.11 from Mandrake with KDE. My platform is an Acer TravelMate c300 notebook. I searched the mailing list archive but didn't see similar report of the problem I figure I must be missing some other pieces or having the wrong versions. By the way, I also got errors when building 'multiboot-smp'. I followed the suggestion to skip the example by creating a null executable. Should I do the same for this example? Could someone please show me what I did wrong? Best example #!/bin/bash in scripts which should be replaced by #!/usr/bin/env bash or even better #!/bin/sh for better portability. I think the whole build process needs some kind of autoconf magic, too, to make it less GNU/Linux dependent. hi, i see thread::raise_exception(ts), and i know this is where l4 notices a linux sys call (int 0x80), however, i do *not* see where the ipc is sent to the linux server to tell it that a syscall has occured (and to get the parameters and handle it)... thanks in advance, -andrew

Some questions

Hello, I first wanted to signal about a little problem i found : when i launch an application i did for l4 with the loader it works fine but after its end i want to launch a legacy linux application and i get the message KERNEL: Security violation: Not pager of 36. Maybe i forgot something to close my program but i don't know what or maybe it is something else. I also wondered if it was possible to build a standard linux kernel from the l4linux sources ? I think so but i'm not sure. And for a last question i'd like to know if there's a way to share devices such as for example hard drives between l4 and the l4linux server. I saw dde but i don't know if it is still up with the 2.6 portage and i haven't found a lot of doc about it except the manual. Thanx a lot for your help. Fabien Chaillou

Hello, I want to use a patched gcc toolchain, but i'm going to have problems. Is there a global configuration file where I can (easily) which gcc (and other tools) should be used? Even "make confg" seems to use the standard gcc. Where can I change that? Emanuel

All, With this setup, what's the best way to reboot the system remotely (e.g. via ssh)? l4lx: l4FB via con and dope

Hi, I am trying to setup a lean l4linux-2.6 with a local text console, without dope or con. I got it printing out the console an login prompt but it ignores input from the keyboard. I have one of those multiplexing devices - that switches the keyboard, mouse and monitor from one computer to the other -- i have a computer for compiling and one for testing. This may be a reason why it ignores the keyboard.... Thanks, andrew

task not cleared properly

After my main function has exited, the task still seems to live. On the serial debug console I see: myapp | Main function exit with code 0 but pressing N at the cmd prompt console shows: 1E.00 myapp.rm 1E.01 myapp.sem 1E.02 myapp.main and every time I run my app another instance appears... Is there anything I am supposed to do to make the task go away properly? I am running simple_ts and events, and my app is a l4env_freebsd app compiled in DROPS and running in the fiasco kernel. Let me know if I need to supply further information.

relocated address

Is there a way to get a program's relocated address? I think I need this to make my program work correctly when run from loader via tftp... I access a PCI device, the code at one point calls virt_to_bus, which uses an extern unsigned int offset which is 0, but there is a comment saying that the offset should be set to the program's relocated address instead of 0... Running my program from grub works just fine, but not from loader, presumably because of this. The program itself "works" from loader, but not the PCI interfacing, so I'm sure its got something to do with relocation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Memory management

Hello, let's say in my rootserver I need a contiguous block of memory 1 MB in size. I would request this memory from Sigma0 via L4_Sigma0_GetAny and get a single Flexpage of this size. In order to implement a fine-grained write-barrier on parts of this memory block, I need to make individual pages of this block read-only. As I understand it, the privileged system call MemoryControl provides this functionality, but: a) it is privileged, but all my servers would need this functionality. How is this efficiently accomplished? b) MemoryControl seems to operate on whole fpages only. How do I split a flexpage? booting l4linux under drops

Hello, I've tried to boot L4Linux under Dope using the grub menu from the demo cd. But there is no dopelog and doperun being build by the cvs source. What is initrd.gz good for? Anyway not using these tasks or using the ones from the demo cd results in a frozen system after dope has launched. Is there really no Dope client application available in the cvs source? fprov-l4 problem

Hello, as you guessed, i forgot to patch fprov-l4 with twiddler so now it works perfectly. I still have some questions: - is it possible to give directly the arguments to program launched by run-l4 without using a configfile ?. - i would like to know if it is possible to see all the l4 task running with one program given with l4env, i thought the minitop might be ok but it doesn't, i understood afterward that it mutst work with con or dope. L4Linux console using CPU

Hi, Does anybody perhaps know why a DROPS virtual console focused on a L4Linux virtual console uses up CPU time? Is this "normal" behaviour? My DROPS console shows +- 25% CPU usage if the DROPS virtual console is focused on the L4Linux terminal, +- 1% if the DROPS virtual console is focused on something else (e.g. run console). From what I can tell, the thread running the L4Linux virtual console is at priority 0xff, but the main L4Linux task appears to be at default priority 0x10... Is this correct? Thanks in advance, Bert

Hello, I'm trying to build Fiasco with L4Linux. While compiling the l4/pkg/nethub package needs a crypto/libdes.a and cxx_log_io library, which are missing. Which package is going to create them?
