Maybe it is a bug of L4/Fiasco or L4Linux

Hi, everyone: When I use netpipe to test the performance of L4Linux based on top of L4/Fiasco there is something as following: kernel BUG at include/linux/netdevice.h:886! The fiasco kernel and roottask I build are too large to put in the floppy.
by Zheng Da 17 Sep '06

17 Sep '06

I found the two files in drops-demo-floppydisk-current.img are quite small. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 166060 2005-08-15 15:53 fiasco -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 61545 2005-08-15 15:41 roottask But the ones I build are so large that there are on enough space for them in the floppy. -rwxr-xr-x 1 zhengda zhengda 639K 2006-09-16 00:25 bin/x86_586/l4v2/roottask -rwxr-xr-x 1 zhengda zhengda 358K 2006-09-16 00:08 l4/kernel/fiasco/build/main I got fiasco from CVS, and followed the steps showed in http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/fiasco/use.html I want to create a hard disk image, and then there will be enough space. Unfortunately, I don't know how to create a hard disk image. So does anyone have some ideas? Thank you.

PXE enabled GRUB
by Adam Lackorzynski 15 Sep '06

15 Sep '06

Hi, this might be of interest to you. I have added PXE network driver support for my GRUB patch set recently. This enables GRUB to load files via the network using any PXE capable NIC, including latest e1000, Broadcom, e100, 3coms, etc. cards. The patch, README and binary are at the usual place at: http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~adam/grub/0.97/ Refer to the README file for details. If you have a NIC that has PXE and does not work, please let me know. Adam -- Adam adam(a)os.inf.tu-dresden.de Lackorzynski http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~adam/

Hi, does a list of the L4Linux kernel parameters (e.g. l4ser.vkey_irq) exist somewhere? Regards, Andi

Drops BID questions
by Andreas Niederl 14 Sep '06

14 Sep '06

Hi, the Building DROPS HOWTO states that by executing 'make' in the l4 directory everything will be built including Fiasco. My first question now is if there are any prerequisites for the BID to include Fiasco building, because Fiasco doesn't get touched by the BID for me. I also wanted to ask if Fiasco is included in the install target of the top-directory Makefile and if there are any plans to include an install target for L4Linux. For the latter, I've already made up something by reusing a slightly modified arch/i386/boot/install.sh script and added install targets to the Makefiles in arch/l4 and arch/l4/boot. Regards, Andi

get error when compiling fiasco-1.1 with gcc 4.1.2
by Zheng Da 14 Sep '06

14 Sep '06

I got fiasco-1.1-oskit.tar.bz2.tar and fiasco-1.1.tar.bz2.tar, and unpacked them into one directory. I have build the kernel successfully with gcc 3.x. But when my gcc updated to 4.1.2, I can't build the kernel at all. The two tar-balls are unpacked to the directory /storage/soft/l4/tmp/fiasco- 1.1 And the error I got is as follow: make[3]: Entering directory `/storage/soft/l4/tmp/fiasco-1.1/oskit/libkern' gcc -c -MD -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../libkern/x86 -I../libkern/x86/trap -I../libkern/x86/pc -I../libkern -iquote -I.. -I.. -I../flux/c -nostdinc -g -O2 -march=i586 -Wall ../libkern/x86/base_cpu_init.c In file included from ../libkern/x86/base_cpu_init.c:22: ../flux/x86/base_trap.h:105: error: array type has incomplete element type make[3]: *** [base_cpu_init.o] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/storage/soft/l4/tmp/fiasco-1.1/oskit/libkern' make[2]: *** [libkern/all.MAKE] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/storage/soft/l4/tmp/fiasco-1.1/oskit' make[1]: *** [all] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/storage/soft/l4/tmp/fiasco-1.1/oskit' make: *** [../oskit] Error 2 Quite strange. Does anyone compile fiasco1.1 successfully with gcc 4.x?

Documentation generation and the build directory
by Andreas Niederl 12 Sep '06

12 Sep '06

Hi, I am using a build directory for building L4Env (O=build in Makeconf.local) and I am getting errors about missing files from the documentation rather often. An example would be: ! LaTeX Error: File `dataspaces' not found. I then have to manually copy the file from the documentation directory to the subdirectory of the build directory as in cp doc/l4env-concept/dataspaces.fig build/doc/l4env-concept Is this normal behaviour or am I doing something wrong, such that the files don't get copied to the subdirectory in build? Regards, Andi

Project Ideas?
by Eric M. Hielscher 10 Sep '06

10 Sep '06

Hi all, My name is Eric Hielscher, and perhaps some of you will remember me as the student from Amsterdam who visited your group briefly this August. I'm looking to do a project related to L4 this semester in an attempt to familiarize myself with the codebase in preparation for my applying for PhD positions in the fall but after a short look at the websties haven't found an up-to-date listing of project ideas. Is there such a page? If not, do you have some ideas for properly-sized and properly-difficult projects that you'd like to see done? Thanks and regards, -- Eric Hielscher http://ehielscher.org

As a beginner, hello, not working due to trap...
by 조완근 10 Sep '06

Hello!!   I'm a totally newbie at L4-Fiasco. I have tried to run the hello program with the fiasco kernel since yesterday. I just want the following commands in menu.lst of grub work well so that I can see the "hello" message.   ------------------------------------------------------ title       Hello_World kernel      (hd0,5)/fiasco/bootstrap -comport 1 -serial modaddr     0x02000000 module      (hd0,5)/fiasco/fiasco -nokdb module      (hd0,5)/fiasco/sigma0 module      (hd0,5)/fiasco/roottask module      (hd0,5)/fiasco/hello ------------------------------------------------------ I can solve the "modaddr" problem with grub-0.97 by installing grub-0.90 in a floppy disk. And then I'm now in a stuck with the following error.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ......... 64 Entry I TLB (4K or 4M pages) 64 Entry D TLB (4K or 4M pages) 12k u-ops T Cache (8-way associative)     8 KB L1 D Cache (4-way associative, 64 bytes per line) 256 KB L2 U Cache (8-way associative, 64 bytes per line) Freeing init code/data: 16384 bytes(4 pages) .... Registers' contents showed.... trap 3 (Breakpoint), error 00000000 from kernel mode Panic: terminated due to trap Return reboots, "k" enters L4 kernel debugger... -----------------------------------------------------------------------   I've already tried modifying kernel option so many times. But it didn't work.   How can I solve this problem??     Thank you!!   Jo.
