Sawmill defunct?

Hello, I'm interested in Sawmill, but could not find any place to download it and the e-mail address on the web site does not work. Does anyone know if the project still exists and if so, wether there is a Sawmill mailing list and/or download page somewhere. I'm new to L4 and would like to learn more about microkernels by playing around a bit with the various versions. But it looks like that, except for the L4 kernels, there is not much to play with. Semantics of extraordinary scheduling

Hello, I have a question about extraordinary scheduling in L4: The specification is unclear about if/how the thread's scheduling priorities are involved in the game. What is the intended behavior if -say- a high priority thread donates its remaining timeslice to a lower-priority one. If I understand the code correctly, what happens in existing L4 implementations is that 1. The recipient gets to execute regardless of it's priority, i.e. even if there are runnable threads that have a higher priority than the recipient, that recipient still gets the CPU. 2. If, while the recipient is running on its donated time slice, another, higher priority thread becomes ready (e.g. due to an interrupt), the recipient is preempted. So far so good, but, when that preempting thread blocks again, the scheduler selects the next thread solely according to priority, i.e. if the recipient does not have the highest priority, another thread will run and the recipient may effectively loose its donated time prematurely due to an unrelated event (interrupt). My naive gut feeling suggests that either 1. or 2. are not really the intended behavior. Am I missing something ? Is anybody using this mechanism at all ? Stupid newb can't "make -C l4 config"- THANKS

Well, I woke up with the realisation that maybe there was a src for debianutils at debian.org- and so there was.. have installed tempfile, all OK now but /slightly embarrassed/ Sorry to bother you all; but "Thanks Adam" for the swift response. I now have a proper config and an almost successful make. I will hack the latter somewhat before coming back to the list. Cheers All DD

Stupid newb can't "make -C l4 config" ..

Hullo L4 Stuck at an early fence:: usually I can overcome these things. make -C l4 config fails with /bin/sh: tempfile: command not found have been looking for it everywhere. seemingly part of Python, I have Python 2.2 and tbh my binutils is a bit lower than specified but I would have thought this insignificant. Google not much help either. Clean install of SuSE linux 8.0, kernel 2.4.18 Would seriously love to get this going as I have a little project that could go rather nicely on top of it, but am totally lost with this silly command. The DROPS team is happy to announce the first release of the L4Env programming environment. L4Env is a programming environment for application development on top of the L4 microkernel family. It is developed as a part of the Dresden Real-Time Operating System (DROPS). Prior to L4Env, most L4 applications had their very own idea about the environment (libraries, interfaces and so on) in which they were executed. Almost every programmer had his own set of libraries he used to build his applications, which resulted in huge problems if someone tried to combine components developed by different authors. Frequent problems were conflicting implementations of common functions (like printf) or conflicts caused by the lack of a central management of resources like threads or virtual memory. The intention of L4Env is to define a set of functions which describe a minimal environment. This minimal environment is available for every L4 application. Hence, all applications and especially all libraries can use these functions. Libraries which are intended to be used by many different applications should only use these functions to avoid dependencies to other libraries. L4Env also decreases the dependencies to a certain L4 API or hardware architecture, making applications more portable. L4Env is available under the GPL version 2 licence. Hi, How do we define printf in ia32-v4 ? I see there is a print.cc implementation but it won't be used(?) for the linking stage even with "#define CONFIG_KDB y" and or "#define CONFIG_VERSION_X0 1" in $(OBJ)/config.h...
