Re: How to run an application on l4linux

Hi, > Do i have to generate kernel modules and copy to my ramdisk for > executing any linux application on l4linux? Or is there any other method ? No, you only have to generate kernel modules if you want to load them into the L4Linux kernel. If you simply want to run a Linux user application on top of L4Linux all you have to do is to make this program binary available to L4Linux, for instance by putting it onto the ramdisk. (You can mount the ramdisk with the -o loop option as Matthias already indicated.) > Regarding building kernel modules, I did the following: > I auto.conf file, I added CONFIG_L4_BLK_DS_DRV = y > I generated hello.ko file. Many thanks for the l4 team in helping me resolve my errors. I have succesfully built fiasco.oc,l4re,l4linux I want to execute a socket program(linux application) on l4linux or using l4linux. Hence, I am in need of step by step procedure for executing it. Also, is there any links or reference pages regarding how to use l4linux and how to run linux applications on l4linux? Gayathri

Upon the boot of l4linux iso image using QEMU, I got the following: vmlinuz | RAMDISK: ext2 filesystem found at block 0 vmlinuz | RAMDISK: Loading 3072KiB [1 disk] into ram disk... done. vmlinuz | EXT4-fs (ram0): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities vmlinuz | EXT4-fs (ram0): mounting ext2 file system using the ext4 subsystem vmlinuz | EXT4-fs (ram0): mounted filesystem without journal. Opts: (null) vmlinuz | VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) on device 1:0. vmlinuz | Freeing unused kernel memory: 144K (00709000 - 0072d000) vmlinuz | Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = 3346692958 ns) vmlinuz | /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off I disabled ACPI and power management options also. I have included init=/bin/sh in l4linux.cfg script. Still the linux command prompt doesn't appear via l4linux launch. The script is below: //l4linux.cfg: L4.default_loader:start({}, "rom/vmlinuz mem=64M console=ttyLv0 l4x_rd=rom/ramdisk-x86.rd root=1:0 ramdisk_size=4000 init=/bin/sh");

UX/RT - a Universally eXtensible Real-Time OS
by Andrew Warkentin 01 Feb '15

01 Feb '15

I am planning to write a new L4-based multi-server OS called UX/RT (initially I will use Fiasco.OC as the kernel since it has x86_64 support and supports kernel capabilities, but may eventually support seL4 as well). Unlike the other current L4 OS environments, it will be a multi-server Unix-like OS resembling QNX and Plan 9. I am intending it to have good support for both desktop and embedded systems (servers are not a huge priority; the microkernel architecture might limit the maximum throughput for heavily I/O-bound workloads). I am dissatisfied with all the current mainstream OSes and want to take on the challenge of making something better. I am planning to reuse as much existing third-party code as possible, especially as I will probably be working on it alone at first (of course if anybody here wants to contribute they can). However, due to the design, the only part of L4Re that I can use as-is is sigma0 (which may require minor changes to fit into the XIP-based boot process I am going to use). I will be implementing my own root task which may use a few parts of moe, although I haven't looked too closely at the source for moe so I'm not sure if there's anything there that I can use. Other than sigma0, the low-level kernel headers, and possibly some parts of moe, I'm not sure if there is much else from L4Re (or Genode) that would be useful in the context of a pure Unix-like multi-server OS. Most of the code I reuse will come from BSD and GNU (which gets me quite far; the root task will probably be the biggest part of the base OS that will be primarily original code). I already have a very good idea of the design I'm going to use; I'll post more about it later.

Problem with Socket program
by Gayathri Nagarajan 01 Feb '15

01 Feb '15

I am trying to execute a socket program like - client server. I am getting errors like "undefined reference to socket". But I have included <sys/socket.h>. I tried adding library "-lsocket", still the same error. Also, I get errors like "Library Dependencies missing", "Cflags dependencies missing". What libraries have to be added in the makefile for any socket program? The kernel implementation of socket is also available in uclibc pkg of l4re. How do I make my program linked to the socket call? Please help us resolve this error to get the program built successfully. Thank you very much
