If I was to say that being tightly architectutre coupled is strange or that since l4 took almost everything out of the kernel, memory management could have been evicted as well (like eros microkernel does), then you may need to get offended. Otherwise, I don't see your point. L4 papers states that since there is no way to prove that Mach only causes 5% degradation statement is not valid. I say same logic applies to MkLinux vs. L4Linux. I am not trying to start am flame war. Nor do I claim that L4 is worthless. I simply want to see if there is a way to validate specific statement. If there is, that means that statement is valid, if there is not, then you tell me ... As simple as that. IS.

Just out of curiosity -- where do you want to get the not publicly available L4 x86-assembly kernel from to actually being able to redo the measurements? It is intellectual property of a company and not downloadable anywhere. Furthermore, if you redo the measurements on different hardware and you read the "On mk construction" paper you should know that MKs (at least L4 MKs) are highly optimized for one particular architecture. Hence, even when having the kernel and running it on different hardware your numbers are bogus and do not state anything except that you get a set of more numbers...

performance of L4Linux

I read paper comparing performance of L4Linux of MkLinux (atop OSFMK) on x86 computer. Results are very interesting. I would really like to conduct benchmarks on my own. I know where to download Linux and L4Linux, but not the MkLinux for Intel. Does anyone still have binaries? If you do, please let me know how I could get these. Thank you, IS.

Local IPC identifier

hi, For some purposes when sending ipc to other threads in my task space, I find the need to explicitly state a taskid problematic. This information is redundant, and redundancy _always_ leads to problems. For me, the problem occurs when I move the l4linux server to a new task number, and another l4linux runs with my old number. All my threads get confused, and there is little I can do to help them (not without C&C at least, but that would still force me to use a taller task hierachy than I would like). What I need is something like 'if partner.id.task==0 then partner.id.task=current.id.task' in the kernel, and I suppose I will make such a hack myself. Is this what the rumoured 'lipc' feature in Pistachio is all about? Or is such a feature already present? thanks, Jacob

Lack of C&C redirection?

crt0.S and C++

Hi, Could anybody help me with crt0.S? I have project, which tightly related to L4. Project written in C++ and use abstract classes. The crt0.S was taken from FIASCO L4 examples and works well with C code. Unfortunately, it does not work with C++ code. Calling constructors for global objects does not work. Program crashed when abstract classes or virtual functions are used. It seems, virtual tables is not initialized. Guess a __static_initialization_and_destruction_0 function was not called. Does anybody have a C++ compatible crt0.S? Alexei

I am interessed by a such project. In the past, I planed to write an Unix like on top of L4 in Ada. The goal was to port the GNAT Ada Run-Time on top of L4 and then write all the servers needed to make a good O.S. My new job take me a LOT of time, but I plan to realise this a futur day. Hi, I was wondering what the time frame for the Pistachio micro-kernel looks like cuz i'm really interested in working on a multiserver project (ex. sawmill) under the v. 4 spec. the performance gains should be outstanding and good enough to compete against most monolithic kernels (not that the hazelnut kernel doesn't give them a run for their money). Tuning L4Linux on Fiasco

hi, the original l4linux papers mention performance about 4% lower than native linux. When running l4linux on top of Fiasco, performance seems to be more like 50% of what we get with native 2.2. For example, encoding a .wav-file to ogg-vorbis takes 2 minutes native, and almost 4 minutes with l4linux. LMBench also gives way-different figures. Is there anything we can do to tune Fiasco for better performance? Are other people experiencing the same speed differences as we are? Best regards, Jacob

Clans&Chiefs question

hi, I have the following setup: - rmgr, fiasco, and sigma - a network server 'net' which exports an abstracted ethernet-device, built with oskit10. - a custom pager, 'pager' which is able to spawn new l4linux servers (currently piggybacked on to it). All started via entries in menu.lst, using Grub The spawned l4linuxes would like to talk to 'net' so that they may boot from NFS. However, net and pager are not in the same clan, so that is not allowed (obviously they need to talk to pager as well to get paged). Both net and pager need to talk to rmgr. Is there a way, other than merging net & pager into one task (which works fine, but is not really what I want), in which this can be made to work in fiasco? Thanks, Jacob

Redhat got a development CVS gcc snapshot and released it as gcc 2.96 in their distribution. The gcc team states that the object format used by 2.96 is not compatible with neither 2.95 nor 3.x. Eventually Redhat people got a clue and shipped a working compiler (kgcc). I strongly recommend to use gcc 2.95.x or gcc 3.x for building the L4 tree. Dear gentleman, I am sorry for disturb. First of all, what's happen with Fiasco microkernel? Latest CVS version does not compiles, but two week old version is work Ok. Guess it is because Fiasco migrating to the X.2 version API specification. Is it so? Next question is, why L4Linux does not start? After running L4Linux, the microkernel complain with double page fault at page 0. Best regards Alexei

hi, i am new to fiasco. When trying to compile it using the sources from the CVS i am getting a lot of errors. I know that the type of errors are required for any guidance, but would like to know some details about the preferred compiler, OS etc: This would prove very helpful to me. Furthermore, I'd like to know if there is/will be any effort to implement the X.2 (upcoming version 4) L4 API building on the Fiasco codebase (that would be quite interesting, since the HURD L4 port will use the X.2/4 API). Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself: I am an italian computer science student, and a newcomer in the µkernels stuff ... so I am trying fiasco (by now, still trying to understand bochs, to be able to test it). One of my wish is to experiment with functional programming (with Haskell) and µkernels to see if a standalone system could be mainly functional. But... here comes my first wish: User-mode-fiasco ! user-level port

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask. (If not, please point me there ;-)) I have read on the Fiasco homepage that Fiasco is beeing/was ported to run as a user-level process under Unix. What is the state of this project? And what is the mentioned CVS branch? However, I am interested in this. A nice way to go would be to port Fiasco to a386 (http://a386.nocrew.org/) IMO. I don't know if I can be of any help, since I haven't (yet) done much kernel-level hacking... Hello folks, First of all I'd like to thank you for such a development environment: linux over L4. After some time reading the faq and the mail list I could make it work. But now some questions: 1) Is X Window System still not running under l4linux ? I got: sys_iopl() called (8 times) "XF86_SVGA" (22.00) raised page fault (error =04) at 000000004 (vm_area can't grow down). 2) I'd like to run "kernel debugger" after l4linux boots (just for fun). Kernel debugger manual says that I could by pressing ESC but when I try, my system halts. 3) It seems that command "halt" doesn't work. It goes till "unmounting local file systems" and stops.
