Hi all, I am adding a bit of extra code to the TFTP server and I found that if I malloc() memory that I get the error: ../com/register.c:78: failed assertion `global_registry' I've added the following line... l4_ssize_t l4libc_heapsize = 4*1024; ...to the main file but I still get the error. Issues on L4linux

hello... I've been running l4linux in l4env mode for some time, but some errors never ceased to exist. The first error consists on page faulting. The error consists on the dm_phys saying it page faulted correctly, but the task i was running blocks... to what values must or wich commands sould i use in order to increase the memory so that i can proceed with the tasks? The other error happens when i try to reboot. When i halt the system, no problem arises. bue when i try to reboot, the systems always pagefaults... what's the problem with that? thanks for the help Tiago

Using run with bmodfs as file-provider

Hi, i have a problem with using 'run' and bmodfs as file-provider. When i used tftp everything went fine. But now i have to use bmodfs, because i also need flips and that clashs with tftp. So i gave 'run' the argument '--fprov=BMODFS'. running C++ function as THREADCONTROL thread

Hi, I looked at the pingpong code and found how a thread is created and activated using THREADCONTROL system call. It uses C function pointers and typecasts them to L4_Word_t which are then passed to threadcontrol system call to run this function as thread. I want to use a C++ function as the thread. But C++ member function pointer seem not to be as simple as C function pointers. Their size changes as well, with the compiler or compiler-options, because of inheritance. From various comments on the mailing list I know that I cannot make use of exceptions and RTTI, but unfortunately the program links against a library that makes heavy use of both. What should I do? The L4Ka team is pleased to announce the release of a new approach to building virtual machines, which we call pre-virtualization. Pre- virtualization is a technique to automate para-virtualization, and is thus a more trustworthy alternative to L4Linux, and yet with the same performance that L4Linux has always achieved on the L4Ka microkernels. Since the virtualization is automated, the final binary (whether Linux 2.6, Linux 2.4, FreeBSD, etc.) can execute on raw hardware, and on a variety of hypervisors. At load time, the binary's virtualization-sensitive instructions are rewritten, and the OS is dynamically linked against an architectural emulation layer. The project has been co-developed with UNSW/NICTA. The project web page is located at: http://l4ka.org/projects/virtualization/afterburn/ The current release supports the L4Ka::Pistachio microkernel and the Xen hypervisor, on x86 hardware. We currently release support only for Linux 2.6 as a guest OS. Other operating systems are under test. This project obsoletes our prior L4Ka L4Linux work. Killing L4Linux

Hi How does one kill L4linux from the DROPS console using the loader program? This is what I am currently doing: 1:I type 'n' at the DROPS console to get task ID's and names. This is what I get: . . F.02 LOADER 12.03 Linux server . . 2. I type 'k' and then '12', and I get: 'Error -11 (not owner) killing task #12'. Any ideas? tftp issue when starting 3 VMs

L4Linux Scheduling error with Kernel Module

Hi all, My Kernel Module seem to be working fine for most of the time. But I get an intermittent error where the Kernel crashes with the following error: <snip> Scheduling in interrupt KERNEL: 12.9 (tcb=c0484800) killed: Unhandled trap <snip> The Kernel module does not control any interrupts and at this point-in-time is pure virtual. hello... I'm having a problem with the FLIPS server. I'm doing some transmission in TCP and i seems that the call from the client to the FLIPS server doesn't arrive. I've putten some printfs along the way in l4vfs_net_io_send_call and he does the call the IPC function... but i've putten also some debug message in l4vfs_net_io_send_component and it doesn't print out... so something is dying around here and i don't know where...:( My questions are... in the FLIPS/L4vfs net_io server side where should i put the debug to see if the call has arrived? (i've tried in net_io-server.c and nothing is shown) i've sent something earlier trought that socket... i mean... it only dies when i try to send something the second time... am i missing something (the socket its the same it stays connected)? is there any problem with FLIPS that prevents me from sending something from a socket that is blocked in a recv in another thread (should't be because TCP is bi-directional)? thanks in advance Tiago

Hi, As I'm trying to implement a real-time application in DROPS, I still have some questions on this topic. Maybe there's someone who can answer them because I didn't find it described it the documentation... 1. The timer granularity seems to be set to 976 microsec. Is there a special background for using this number or can I set it down (maybe even to 10 microsec, which what be a good time resolution for my task)? How can I set it? Or would it be stupid to set it to such a tiny value? 2. When looking at the rt_sched example in the hello-package: the main-thread has a preempter-thread for recognizing timeslice overrun and deadline misses. When does this preempter-thread recognize a TS overrun or a deadline miss? Right after this event (so within the next time resolution) or after the main-thread says that is has finished it's work (meaning after a call to "l4_rt_next_reservation")? 3. How can the preempter-thread tell the main-thread to stop it's work in case of a timeslice overrun or even a deadline miss? 4. Does the system allow a thread's scheduling like this: period-length = 976 microsec, timeslice_mand = 9760 microsec, timeslice_opt = 9760 microsec (which would mean that the system had to reserve timeslices that don't fit into one period...) OR period-length = 9760 microsec, timeslice_mand = 4380 microsec, timeslice_opt = 4380 microsec (which would mean that the system had to reserve all resources for this thread..) (what would happen if another thread comes with a period_length of also 9760 microsec and a timeslice_mand = 6000 microsec? What would be the system's behaviour?) ===================================================================== Other thing: File system support: 1. which filesystems are supported (reiserfs?)? 2. L4 IPC doubt

hello to you all. Let me describe my cenario... I have my L4 server that receives ipc calls. The code was generated from DICE. And i have a lib and i've implemented a client that uses that lib. My L4 server also uses ipc to comunicate with other servers, mainly with flips that also uses IPC. that problem is the following: My client makes an IPC call and blocks waiting for the answer from my server... while processing that answer, my server has to comunicate with flips using IPC. The problem is here... my server blocks in the ipc_send when calling flips, but when i remove the call from the client it works fine, meaning that the client is not blocked waiting for ipc to return. My questions are... why can't i do IPC while another one that has nothing to do with my server is blocked? there can be only one ipc call in the whole system at a time? they all must be sequential? thanks in advance Tiago

L4linux kernel module and IPC problem

Hi all, I've created some test code in a L4 Task, L4Linux App and L4Linux Kernel (2.4.28) module that communicates using short IPC messages. It works fine except that it seems that I can not send an IPC message to the L4Linux App from the Kernel Module (reverse is fine). l4_ipc_send() does not report any errors, but the App does not receive anything and the register values contains some 'random' values. Any suggestions for the reason? Suggestions as to how to debug this problem is appreciated! Thanks Leon

Hi, hackers. I downloaded the latest cvs version that is everything all including fiasco, l4env, libstdc++, ostkit, ostkit10... etc. And I completed compile all without some package where /l4/pkg/... (l4vfs, nethub, proxygon, verner) I tested a sample binary that is hello_cxx where in /l4/bin/x86_585 directory. Kernel Module Pointers for L4Linux on Fiasco

Anyone have any pointers on using kernel modules with L4Linux? Here's the setup: i386 L4 Fiasco V.2 L4Linux third party kernel modules We've been playing with various modules trying to get them to work with the L4Linux kernel. Some modules compile fine against the L4Linux source; others give warnings. Further, some load fine but do not work properly; others complain about missing symbols. It is conceivable that we have non-L4Linux related issues but wanted to check and see if there is anything special to know about building modules for L4Linux? Specifically, what are possible reasons that a kernel module would work on a stock i386 arch Linux kernel but not work on the same version L4 arch Linux kernel? Thanks! -Julian

Various things on log_net package

Hi, While trying to get the log server working for logging to network, I found some problems/bugs... And here is my report: L4DIR/pkg/log_net/server/src/tcpip.c: l.96 : in #define INITDRV(drv) the called function can give an error, but this error is just ignored (fct. init_ethernet always returns 0) l.264: (closing etherdev on error) if you select a wrong driver in init_ethernet, the system boot will fail with strange output over and over again (maybe just logging to normal console and go on booting is more desired??) L4DIR/pkg/log/server/src/logserver.c l.45: initializing buffer for net output if the buffer size is not given explicitly as command line switch the later buffer size is 0(!! not 4096 as expected). Therefore the logging to the network will not work. In order to prevent this you should put some lines right after parsing command line parameters in main(), e.g.: // if flushing to net && no buffer_size specified, use an initial value if (flush_to_net && !buffer_size){ buffer_size = 4096; } (or you should document it somewhere) BTW: to use the correct driver in init_ethernet for vmware, you should use "vlance" as network setting in vmware and "INITDRV(lance)" in init_ethernet, the drivers for 3com cards are not called 3c??? as I expected but can be used with "INITDRV(etherlink<??>)" with <??>="","2","3","16","plus" or "INITDRV(vortex)". In my opinion this should be documented somewhere. (in case it is already, and I was just too stupid to find it, ignore this remark...) Problem when using the logging to network within a program that uses the parse_cmd library I can't explain why this is the case, but when you use the log server compiled for network output and afterwards start an application that uses "parse_cmdline" the logging will not go to network, but to local console (even if you specify "-nolocal" on the log server). Hi all, I have a L4Linux kernel module which creates a kernel thread, but the new thread and the module has the same L4 thread ID [l4_myself()] while their PIDs are different as usual. Is this correct? Thanks Leon
