And when it doesn't find that it runs e2fsck on the file system, which in turn fails. That sounds promising Adam. But I am having this trouble with compiling L4Env. I downloaded all the stuff, and tried to compile the L4Env. But L4Env needs linux22 (I have no clue why?) I have that in ../l4linux22 directory, but inside a makefile in l4linux22/arch/l4/ there is a hard coded requirement for GCC to be 2.95 and my compilation stops at that point. I have GCC 3.3 something. Can someone tell me what should be done in this case? Thanks. You are probably missing libloader.s.so in your build tree. This library comes from l4/pkg/loader/lib/runtime and should install to l4/lib/*/*/libloader.s.so. Thanks a lot. That helped a lot. F Everyone's I, More information on major and minor devices can be found at src/Documentation/devices.txt I had a boot CD for l4linux on fiasco. It was loading a ramdisk which was getting the binaries from CD. Since I was having no luck getting l4linux compiled, I decided to copy these binaries to hard disk and change the grub.conf to make it boot from hard disk. But after doing some intuitive things I found that it won't load l4linux until CD is put in. So I tried to learn how the bootloading takes place. In the process I stumbled upon this root=1:0 problem mentioned up in the thread. My ext3 root file system is installed on /dev/hda6, from the devices.txt file mentioned above I got that 1:0 stands for RAMdisk and for /dev/hda6 I will have to put 3:6. It worked (with the help of RAMdisk provided on l4linux download page).. However now I have come to know that there is no passing around compilation of L4Linux and L4Env, because the ram disk is designed for 2.6.8.1 and it looks for /lib/2.6.8.1... which I will need to build myself. Hi, I an confused about the bootprompt arguments mention in the l4linux.cd.k_us.cfg file that is given to the loader to load the L4Linux 2.6 kernel. The line is : task "vmlinuz26" "mem=44M noreplacement root=1:0 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=4096 l4env_rd=initrd.gz panicblink=0 lang=us" What does root=1:0 mean? After referring to "The Linux Bootprompt - HowTo" http://ldp.rtin.bz/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1 I figured out that the argument is of the type root=/dev/* Can anyone help me understand what "root=1:0" mean? I figured out the solution. To reinstall the grub you need to do grub-install /dev/hda This will write the stage1 to the MBR. Doing make, make check, make install did not install this GRUB version (0.90..), my old gnu version (0.93) is what gets loaded when I restart the machine. I also ran the grub-install file from build/util directory: ./grub-install /dev/hda6 Installation finished. No error reported. This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map. Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect, fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'. # this device map was generated by anaconda (fd0) /dev/fd0 (hd0) /dev/hda /dev/hda6 is where my " / " mounted. Dear list, I'm actively into the process of hatching at the Fiasco-UX source-code, and have found the ptrace(2) interface to be quite entertaining. Firstly, the naming convention (ptrace macros) differs from Linux to FreeBSD. However, its relatively trivial to fix (thx to Alexander Julliard), by adding something like: #ifndef PTRACE_PEEKTEXT #define PTRACE_PEEKTEXT PT_READ_D #endif Secondly, a lot of things is done in `Usermode.cpp' in order to manipulate user-visible register set. In particular, I have to trust the effectiveness and the reliability of the following constructor: // save it to <machine/reg.h> struct user_regs_struct regs; regs.xfs = context->uc_mcontext.gregs[REG_FS] In comparison, the FreeBSD kernel implements the ptrace(2) proc_[read/write]_register(proc,regs) for doing this kind of stuff, but its not even close to be a member of uc_mcontext. All in all, it would be nice to know how (and why) this is done on different arch, and finally if the uc_mcontext.gregs constructor is the sole alternative to registers translation. Fiasco-UX build problem

L4Linux and serial port access from other tasks

Hi all, I'm running L4Linux on the Fiasco V2 microkernel on a Pentium IV. I am also running other L4 applications beside the L4Linux kernel. I would like to be able to print debug messages from those applications to the serial port. Messages print fine until L4Linux boots up. As best as I can determine, the problem is that L4Linux gets control of the serial port, and so no other tasks can use it. There may be a way to get this working using the L4Env setup; however, I am trying to keep a very minimal setup and so do not want to use L4Env. Can anyone provide some pointers on how to best go about restricting L4Linux's access to the serial port? Thanks! -Julian

Hi, Here's the summary of what I've done to (almost) compile drops on FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE. - in l4/tool/gendep/syscall.c: Added #ifdef linux to wrap around missing <asm/unistd.h>. - Added $(LDFLAGS) to l4/tool/gendep/Makefile. - Told libgendep.so to link with `perl -MExtUtils::Embed -e ldopts` instead of '-ldl'. - Needed to configure drops with cpp33 instead of cpp0. - In $(OSKIT)/boot/boot_start.c, gcc complained about missing "" characters, so I added a bunch of them. - In $(L4DIR)/mk/Makeconf, I've added FIND=/usr/local/bin/gfind to avoid confusion with FreeBSD find (/usr/bin/find). Problem building the Pistachio 0.4 kernel

Hi All, this is my first attempt to compile the kernel. After installing L4/Pistachio and the tool chain for building a PowerPC kernel (on a PowerBook G4), i got this error message while compiling the kernel sources: pistachio-0.4/kernel/include/glue/v4-powerpc/tcb.h:330: error: can't find a register in class `GENERAL_REGS' while reloading `asm' I'm using gcc-3.4.3 as the cross compiler - compiled with the Apple tools. It doesn't seem that this error has something to do with the sources - more likely it is compiler related. I'm not a compiler guru, thus googling for that error message revealed some more information. Unfortunately no suggested solution for that specific problem seems appropriate. Furthermore, it turned out that this might be an optimization bug in the compiler. When using -O1 optimization when building the kernel (default is -Os), this error disappears. With stronger optimization it comes back. Do you have an idea how to workaround this error (gcc patches or prior versions, etc.)? Thanks in advance for any help! Regards Andreas

I have found a number of papers refering to such setups, including a reference to an OshKosh Network driver. Are such network servers available? Where can I get hold of one? L4Linux 2.4 IRQ problem

Hi all! I'm trying to get L4Linux 2.4 running. There seem to be 2 problems, the first one is that L4Linux has difficulties accessing the IDE controller. The second is related to IRQ 1. This happens on two different machines, so it's probably a configuration issue. However, I don't know where to start in order to fix this. L4 come together at 21C3 in Berlin?

Hi, I just browsed through the 21C3 conference program - http://www.ccc.de/congress/2004/fahrplan-preview/fahrplan.html - and saw that at least some of the people involved in L4 development will be in Berlin (and, the better, give interesting talks). So, this is a good excuse to attend 21C3 (and let the University pay for it :-)) - are there eventually more L4 hackers attending the congress? Perhaps we could organize something like a BoF session... Btw., does anyone have a proposal for an inexpensive place to stay in Berlin from the 27th to the 30th of December? regards, Michael
