Hello What exactly is the current situation with the various graphics related components? Mag appears to be a nitpicker replacement and dope ran under nitpicker. Goos is a new low level framework that is used by mag? Then there are various fb* like fb-drv and fbterminal. What is the current direction of the graphics and GUI components, how do they stack and what is the preferred way to get them to run? Are they documented somewhere? - Taru Karttunen

Hi, The NOVA project is happy to announce that there is a new prerelease of the NOVA microhypervisor available for download at http://www.hypervisor.org/ or http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/~us15/nova/ under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2. NOVA is based on a modern microhypervisor written in C++ and assembler. The current implementation supports x86-32 SMP platforms with hardware virtualization features such as Intel VT-x/VT-d or AMD-V, and facilitates running multiple unmodified guest operating systems in virtual machines with near-native performance. On machines without VT-x or AMD-V, the functionality is reduced to that of a microkernel. The most prominent new feature is support for I/O virtualization and direct assignment of host devices to guest VMs using the IOMMU. L4Re Makefile bug?

I've downloaded the l4re-core-2010070715.tar.bz2 archive, and I've tried to build the project. I have no problem compiling the Fiasco.OC kernel, but the L4Re core build seems to be entering an infinite loop. After running for a few seconds, I get the following lines repeated forever: All checked ok. scripts/kconfig/conf -s [l4dir]/mk/Kconfig scripts/kconfig/conf -s [l4dir]/mk/Kconfig make[11]: Nothing to be done for `all'. I also noticed that I get this same infinite loop if I do make config (after the menu exits) or make oldconfig. Something about the post-config clean-up seems to be continuously forking new processes and looping. The comment at line 179 of the [l4dir]/Makefile indicates that make is called again for postprocessing, but I don't know make well enough to debug this problem. Any ideas what's causing the problem? L4Re and Fiasco.OC on amd64

Hello I am trying to compile Fiasco.OC and L4Re on amd64, but the kernel fails to boot for some reason. Steps taken: 1) Checked out source from SVN 2) Compiled fiasco, make config, set amd64, make 3) Compiled L4Re (and set to amd64) 4) Created hello.iso with make grub1iso E=hello MODULE_SEARCH_PATH=bin/amd64_K8:~/l4r4/fiasco-build 5) Try to boot it with qemu-system-x86_64 -cdrom images/hello.iso -no-reboot -no-shutdown -cpu phenom 6) Fiasco crashes with http://aoi.yi.org/~taruti/crash.png Here is info on the repository: hydra:fiasco$ svn info Path: . Hi all. I am trying to make a test using l4vfs libc backends so the three predefined file descriptors 0, 1, 2 work for stdin, stdout and stderr correspondingly. If I not use term_con at all, and not open vc0 three times as above, read(0, ....); and write(1,....); works but strangely. For example, read() returns immediately with no error and returns a single symbol (EOF, I think). But as I tested in Linux and OS/2 operating systems, when stdin is a console, read(0,...); must block until '\n' is returned (user pressed an Enter key). So, it seems that the file descriptors 0, 1, 2 are reserved, but they are not working as expected. Maybe, my setup is incorrect or something is not yet implemented? I suspect the l4con server libs interfere with l4vfs libs. For example, l4con has its own getchar() implementation but in uCLibc this function is implemented through l4vfs backends. When I am trying to use getchar() or scanf() functions, I see that read() function is called behind the scenes, and it don't get blocked until Enter is pressed. So, any help is appreciated. l4vfs and opendir()/readdir()

Hi all. I am trying to mount a flat file system by simple_file_server in l4vfs tree and then navigating over the file systen, i.e. opening/reading the root directory by opendir()/readdir(), searching the files in the directory and then opening them by open(). Doing this, I found that opendir() sometimes fails, trying to allocate a big (almost 2 gigabytes) dataspace at dm_phys. When I tried to compile my program and l4vfs servers with debug output, I had seen that this is done by calloc() function in opendir() function in l4\pkg\uclibc\lib\contrib\uclibc\libc\misc\dirent\opendir.c: if (!(ptr->dd_buf = calloc(1, ptr->dd_max))) { free(ptr); nomem_close_and_ret: close(fd); __set_errno(ENOMEM); return NULL; } before that, it makes fstat() and assigns ptr->dd_max to a FS block size from the stat buffer. After looking into l4vfs backends and simple_file_server, I had seen that the FS block size is left undefined, so it tried to use a big random value which appeared to be in a stat buffer. So, the fix can be simple -- set FS blksize to something (I set it to 512 bytes). And also, I added copying of that size from the stat buffer in stat() and fstat() functions in libc l4vfs io backend. IPC error: resolved

I Finally understood the cause of an error. It appears that the stack of trampoline() task was the same as the one of LX executable being started. So, the LX executable had trampoline() local variables overwritten, and CORBA_Environment was corrupted ;) This is because IPC operation returned an error. Sorry for inconvenience, WBR, valery

Hi all I am writing a program (API server which implements API and support for LX format executables found in OS/2 operating system). So, it parses an executable, applies fixups and starts it. At the moment it loads a simple executable which calls a single API printing a string on a screen. It generally works, but I got strange IPC problems. There is a function in a server, trampoline() which starts a previously prepared executable in a separate task (it is a kind of wrapper around that executable). After executable termination, trampoline() must synchronize with the server, passing it a message about termination. Then the API server can terminate itself. For synchronization, I tried two ways: 1) sending a message to main server thread through DICE interfaces. As I understand, a problem can be with that client and server stubs are linked to a single program. The return code from l4_ipc_send() is equal to 16 but msgdope is clear (zeroes). I found a description of errors returned in message dopes but what means a return code of 16, I don't know. (For message dope, a error code of 0x10 means that source or destination does not exist, but I am sure it exists) So, l4_ipc_send() exits and l4_ipc_wait() on other side never exits. Maybe, someone can help understanding why it won't work? Thanks in advance.

Hi All, I tried to run a small c++ application which uses stl map on top of fiasco. The application compiles and runs perfectly when compiled using standard c++ libraries. But when I try to create a package with this appilcation source code in tudos/l4/pkg (where compilation is done with uclibc++ instead of standard c++) I get few compilation errors. It would be great if someone gives some pointers on the error. Compilation errors with stl map in uclibc++

Hi All, I tried to run a small c++ application which uses stl map on top of fiasco. The application compiles and runs perfectly when compiled using standard c++ libraries. But when I try to create a package with this appilcation source code in tudos/l4/pkg (where compilation is done with uclibc++ instead of standard c++) I get few compilation errors. It would be great if someone gives some pointers on the error. About consuming time slice on l4linux

I know that l4linux cpu always is allocated on 4th thread on linux server. Also, I want to assign specific timeslice into the linux CPU thread to operate its linux kernel and its user task. To do this, I wanted to be expected in one of linux can use CPU more than another linux. However, even though I assigned timeslice more (it can be done by adding schedule context), 2 linux servers is seemed to be using almost same the amount of CPU. I think that this is because of idle thread. If idle thread is executed, other linux can preempt the linux. Am I right? also, I'm wondering whether user task consumes their own timeslice or donated timeslice from CPU thread. Thank you

I've found that this code is not wrong. The problem was from IPC control in thread-ipc.c in sys-ipc() function, the kernel check whether the ipc is next_period() or not, but the check function is wrong i think because the function returns always "FALSE". That means that there is no next_period() ipc. so I've changed the code in shared/entry_frame-ia32-ux.cpp line 110 return false; --> return (_ecx == 0x04000400 && _esi == 0); I'm not sure that this code does not affect to the other ipc. irq handling in DDE Linux26

Hello, In DDE Linux26, the interrupt is ignored when an interrupt line is disabled, i.e., the handle_irq field of ddekit_irq_ctrl is 0. In ne2k-pci, an example in DDE Linux26, when a packet is transmitted by the driver, disable_irq_nosync_lockdep_irqsave() is called to disable irq. Then it triggers a send and calls enable_irq_lockdep_irqrestore(). Now the problem is that after a packet is transmitted, the transmission-done interrupt can be delivered before enable_irq_lockdep_irqrestore is called, so the interrupt is ignored and the driver thinks the packet cannot be transmitted. This situation happens when I run ne2k-pci in the Hurd porting of DDE Linux26. disable_irq_nosync_lockdep_irqsave is exactly the same as disable_irq_nosync when there isn't CONFIG_LOCKDEP. It seems to me that ne2k-pci shouldn't call it in the first place when transmitting packets, but Linux drivers should be correct. Then what goes wrong? Should the interrupt handler delays interrupts instead of ignoring them silently when the interrupt line is disabled? Best regards, Zheng Da

Hi Adam, My application uses Time Warped simulation library which uses standard c++ library. The time warped library uses a class called multimap which has a default constructor in std c++ library while in uclibc++ there is no default constructor. Hence to conform to uclibc++ I need to pass few arguments to use the current constructor in uclibc++ but this screws up a bit. I can modify multimap in uclibc++ with a default constructor but I am not sure whether default constructor is omitted intentionally and has some side effects. Also I need to do this change to all classes it is inheriting. Thats why I thought is it possible to use std c++ library instead of uclibc++. Can I know the version of std c++ library that is ported to uclibc++? Thanks a lot for your comments. Regards, Karthik

Just so you know, I was a big person in information when it was centered in my home city of NY. Just as NYC's tech industry collapsed (mostly, I believe because of the bombing of the WTC--which itself was a headquarters of free software), I was completing the design criterion of the Thinman model, which is an extension of Perl's CPAN to a VM that is open to the Internet for both data and code. It is anti-app in that each object, presumably a dataset, is, as it is evoked, its own app. Your friends list, as a small example, becomes a phone book in a flexible browser, when it is evoked in the context of a phone call through a model or other connection. I personally know David Korn, which is significant to me, since I believe that his KSH, with its related commands and related shells such as BASH, has provided the best work, and play, environment we have. It has a little awkwardness (which is forgivable given it was a proof of concept at its inception in the 1970s), and no OO version Shell has been attempted. And needless to say, it lacked a visual desktop! Other than those few issues, I cannot help but believe his traditional open shell still provides a model of the type of interactive framework that we need to bring to L4 as the default interface. I have since taken social science paths, and perhaps because of this, I very much want to help work from the top down (as you are with your ground-breaking port) to the lower levels, where everybody else is, so that L4 growth can be what free software is really all about--our system! Hi All, Currently I am trying to port a pingpong c++ application which uses time warped libraries. The time warped libraries use standard c++ library inturn. I tried to compile the pingpong application by modifying the makefiles to include the time warped headers. But I get lot of errors while compiling because during compilation the uclibc++ header files are used instead of standard c++ headers and they differ. Hence I tried to port the warped library functions for uclibc++ but it seems it needs a huge modification. Do modifying makefiles to use standard c++ header files instead of uclibc++ will break other systems? Please let me know your comments. Thanks, Karthik.V.M.

Hi, after looking at the slides you pointed to (at http://www.inf.tu-dresden.de/index.php?node_id=1314&ln=en) the Fiasco for download isn't the one discussed in the slides, right ? So it seems that stuff discussed in your lectures are newer than that what is available for download, esp. the capability part. Also in your recent publications you are speaking about Fiasco.OC and L4Re and not about Fiasco 1.2 and/or L4Env. So what does this all mean ? They are related or is that completly new stuff and just rebranded to known/established names. Some enlightenment would be nice. (Intention of my mail: Try to figure out whether it is worth to start porting stuff to old? outdated? Fiasco 1.2 or to wait [how long?] for the newer stuff you discussing in your slides. Don't want to write or to port stuff twice, probably also interesting for the request of the MPI stuff some days ago.) The system call about Periodic task

I tried to use time periodic task designed by Udo. However, the process using the system call does not enter into periodic mode. So I tried to analyze kernel source code. During examining kernel source code, I found the wired point. line 584 in syscalls.cpp regs->old_param (dst->begin_periodic (regs->time(), 0)); I think that the parameter should be "Periodic" instead of 0. Because the point is for entering periodic mode and 0 means that conventional mode, I think 0 should be changed into "Periodic". After modification of this, A task using the system call enters periodic mode ( I check this by using JDB debugger ). I cannot ensure that this is correct code, but It seems to be working.
